Training Within Industry (TWI)
History
TWI is the genesis of Lean Manufacturing. Developed in the United States in the early 1940's to support the war effort by boosting industrial production, TWI was an unqualified success:
After the war, the TWI program in the US was discontinued and the US companies, fueled by minimal competition spent their energies elsewhere. At this time, TWI was exported to Japan where it played a key role in quickly rebuilding its industrial base. Between 1950-1960 Toyota used TWI to train employees in the Toyota Production System, the first Lean Manufacturing program in the world. Today, TWI is still used by Toyota and several successful companies in Japan and throughout the world. Now, TWI has returned to the US where a new generation has found it to be the key to productivity gains. TWI provides framework by leveraging the role of the supervisor or future supervisors to apply the principals of Kaizen and Lean Manufacturing on an on-going basis.
TWI's 3 Standardized Programs
Job Relations Training (JR)
JR teaches supervisors how to build positive employee relations, increase cooperation and motivation, and effectively resolve conflicts.
Job Instruction Training (JI)
JI teaches supervisors how to quickly train employees to do the job correctly, safely, and conscientiously
Job Method Training (JM)
JM teaches supervisors how to improve the way jobs are done.
All TWI programs cover essential skills needed by the supervisors and team leaders, regardless of their industry. Each TWI program follows a proven four-step process: Preparation, Presentation, Application and Testing.
